Our Guest Quilter - Textile Artist Petal Davies
Petal teaches Free Machine embroidery, Fabric Art Landscapes, ‘wearable’ Wearable Art and Traditional Patchwork classes in her studio at her home in Faulconbridge. She teaches in country towns and has taught interstate and overseas. She has also taught workshops to High school students and to teachers at Teachers Education Association in Sydney.
She has travelled to Japan and Norway to meet patch workers in cultural exchange programs that she is involved with. She is Tafe trained and was a professional dressmaker, before teaching Patchwork. She has been attending courses with TAFTA [The Australian Forum of Textile Arts] for many years [and currently, Context Art] and this has taken her in another direction.
Her memberships include ATASDA NSW, Quilt NSW and she was on the committee of Springwood Quilt show for several years. Her work has been exhibited locally and interstate and has been published in magazines. She is very much into recycling and experimenting with all types of materials, including ‘magnum’ wrappers. Texture is important to her and she likes to use the collage technique in her work for effect, where nothing is wasted. Working on soluble fabric is another favourite, to make laces of all kinds, and sewing bobbin work with thicker threads creating different texture.’
Hope to see you at the meeting.
